The NEST is our nurture provision where we support children to access the curriculum by removing barriers to learning in a safe, calm environment with familiar, experienced adults.
This week we have introduced our new text ‘Iggy Peck the architect’ and had a visit from a real architect. We have been exploring London landmarks and building 3D models of our favourite (talking about the properties of the shapes throughout). Our science work led us to explore different materials thinking about the properties of these materials and what they are used for. It has been a busy, exciting week!!!!
The children have loved learning about money using real life opportunities and linking this to our work on London. We took a bus tour around the city of London, visited different landmarks and finished our trip with afternoon tea at Buckingham palace. We all had our own money bags and had to work out the correct amounts for each of the attractions. On our way home we counted our remaining coins to see if we had enough left to buy a fish supper as we were too exhausted to cook!!!!
This week we have been learning about how we are all the same but different too. We made 'All about Me' bags to share with our friends the key things that make us unique. In literacy we had lots of fun trying to match eyes, mouths, noses to children and adults in the Nest. The story 'The same but different too' was a lovely way of explaining similarities and differences.
This week we have enjoyed reading the story 'Funnybones' and talking about our bodies and the importance and function of different body parts.
We have loved playing games such as 'operation' and 'Twister' to develop our fine and gross motor skills.
This week we have enjoyed reading ‘The Gruffalo’ story. The children made their own a Gruffalo using playdough; they remembered the purple prickles, the orange eyes and the poisonous wart on the end of his nose. We also made our own woodland creatures using adjectives to describe them.

This week we read the story ‘Beware of the Boys’ about a boy who tricks a wolf. It is a fabulous story about recipes and ingredients. Our children have loved making delicious concoctions in the classroom and out on the forest field. They foraged for nettles and then cooked their soup on the campfire with our Forest school leader Mrs Rotherforth.
This week we read the story of ‘The Last Wolf’ written by Mini Grey. We went on our own woodland adventure looking for animals living in our school grounds. It was hard work and we needed to stop to refuel; luckily we had packed a picnic.
This week in Chameleons we have introduced our enquiry question-What would the world be like without plants and trees?
We found out about why plants and trees are so important to our environment and wrote to Mrs Rotherforth our Forest School leader to see if we could plant some more trees on the field. We also introduced the story ‘Tidy’ about a Badger that gets carried away tidying the forest and digs up all the trees and tarmacs the ground; before realising his mistake and digging it all up again and planting more trees.
Giant Chameleons have enjoyed learning about different materials and building shelters for their toys. We have read the story of the 3 little pigs and discussed the best materials to use for different parts of a house.
In PHSE we have been thinking about the importance of sleep. We read several stories linked to sleep and discussed bedtime routines. The children then shared milk and cookies with their toys in the cosy shelters they had built.
In Little Chameleons we have been learning all about families. We want to share some of our favourite books and songs.
We are learning about different animals in our Science this term. This song is helping us to remember the names of the different groups.
In Geography this term we are learning all about the 7 different Continents and 5 Oceans.
A song to help kids learn the 7 continents in order from largest to smallest. Subscribe! ➜ https://www.youtube.com/c/hopscotchsongs?sub_confirmation=1 Visit the Hopscotch Shop!
Exploring oceans
We made our own ocean settings and talked about features of different oceans. The children enjoyed stories linked to our enquiry question about how we can protect our oceans.
Our week in Giant Chameleons
We have had such a busy week in our Chameleon class finding out about healthy foods, making fruit smoothies and playing games to reinforce our learning. The children enjoyed making a healthy pizza and listened and followed instructions well.
Wow! What a busy week we have had in Chameleons. So many exciting activities linked to our investigation into the identity of ‘The Chameleon Cruncher’. We found lots of evidence of things having been nibbled…….This led us down the route of thinking about things that like to nibble. Some children thought about caterpillars as we had read some stories about caterpillars and they definitely nibbled holes in things. 🐛
Several suspects of now been eliminated from our enquiries but the investigation is still ongoing. The case of the chameleon class cruncher is yet to be solved……🔍
What a busy week we have had in Chameleons! We have been exploring what a Chameleon is and investigating colours using lots of different materials. We collected resources from our field to create a Chameleon habitat; then to round off the week we made a colourful Chameleon rainbow cake. It was delicious!
